VOLGOGRAD, January 20 The supply of seeds for early vegetables in the Volgograd region is currently about 70%, they plan to procure seeds until spring, the regional committee reported agriculture against the backdrop of media publications about the shortage of imported seeds.
Earlier, RBC wrote that two large vegetable producing regions — the Astrakhan and Volgograd regions — were faced with the problem of a shortage of imported seeds of tomatoes, carrots and onions before the spring planting season; difficulties could lead to a decrease in the harvest of the largest producer of tomato paste. The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation noted on Saturday that the country’s agro-industrial complex is 60% supplied with open-ground vegetable seeds before the sowing season, which corresponds to last year’s level; procurement continues with an emphasis on domestic selection.
“The region is solving the problem of forming a supply of seeds necessary for sowing work: as of today, up to 70% of the total need for seeds of early-sown vegetables has already been provided. Work on the delivery of vegetable seeds continues, taking into account the timing of sowing specific crops and their varieties and hybrids (in In the Volgograd region, both early and late vegetables are grown,” stated the Volgograd Committee of Agriculture.
According to the agency’s interlocutor, the formation of seed material for sowing traditionally ends in March-April.
As for tomato seeds, the department noted that the supply of these products is being resolved as planned, and the submitted applications have already been approved by suppliers. In addition, as noted in the committee, the region is also engaged in its own selection of vegetables, for example, Volgograd scientists have developed and continue to improve local varieties of tomatoes “Volgogradets” and “Novichok”.
Earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Astrakhan Region informed that up to 70% of the total need for seeds of early sown vegetables has already been provided. The work itself on the import of vegetable seeds continues and is carried out taking into account the sowing dates of specific crops and their varieties and hybrids.
