MOSCOW, January 25 Former football player and head coach of the Ukrainian national team Andrey Shevchenko was elected president of the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF), according to the organization’s website.
The voting took place on Thursday at the extraordinary congress of the UAF in Kyiv. The decision was made unanimously. Shevchenko was the only candidate for the position in which he would replace Andrei Pavelko, who is in jail in the case of embezzlement.
Shevchenko is 47 years old, as a football player he represented the Ukrainian “Dynamo” (Kyiv), the Italian “Milan” and the English “Chelsea”. As part of Milan, he became the national champion (2003/04), winner of the Champions League (2002/03), winner of the Golden Ball (2004). With 48 goals in 111 matches, he is the top scorer in the history of the Ukrainian national team.
Until the summer of 2021, Shevchenko led the Ukrainian national team, which he led to the quarter finals of the European Championship. In mid-January 2022, he left the post of head coach of the Italian Genoa.
