St. PETERSBURG, January 25 Five victims of an accident involving a bus, which drove onto the sidewalk the day before in St. Petersburg, are currently in four hospitals, the city health committee reported.
Earlier, the press service of the regional headquarters of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation reported that the accident occurred on Wednesday at about 16.00 near house 38 on Bering Street. The 58-year-old driver of a bus traveling along route No. 152 drove onto the sidewalk where there were pedestrians. As a result of the accident, five pedestrians received injuries of varying severity.
“The treatment of victims of an accident involving a passenger bus in St. Petersburg is under special control of the Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Oleg Ergashev and the Chairman of the Health Committee Dmitry Lisovets,” the message says.
Victims of the road accident are currently being treated in hospitals.
“There are five patients in four city hospitals who were injured in this accident, four of them are in serious condition. Two of them are in the Mariinsky Hospital,” the committee reports.
According to the chief physician of the Mariinsky Hospital, Igor Reutsky, the hospital has enough funds to treat victims of road accidents.
“Now both patients are in intensive care, both have undergone surgery, they have been examined by related specialists — neurologists, traumatologists, neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists to develop treatment tactics. Yes, both are in serious condition, but for our hospital this is not an emergency situation; we have suffered victims with similar injuries «We receive them almost every day. We have enough resources — professional personnel, equipment, medicines — to provide them with the most effective specialized care. I’ll say right away that their treatment will not be simple and quick. A number of staged surgical interventions and long-term rehabilitation will have to be performed,» the head physician noted.
Earlier, the press service of the regional headquarters of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation reported that after the accident, a criminal case was opened under the article “violation of traffic rules, resulting through negligence in causing grievous harm to human health”, the bus driver was detained. On Thursday it was reported that the State Service of the Russian Federation in St. Petersburg opened a criminal case under the article “provision of services that do not meet the requirements for the safety of life and health of consumers.”
