GM and SAIC tease the public with a stylish station wagon

A five-door body has been announced for the still very fresh model of the Wuling brand. But there is still no 100% certainty that the station wagon will be sent into production.

At the end of last year, the Chinese brand Wuling, which is part of a joint venture between General Motors and SAIC, launched sales of the stylish Starlight sedan (locally called Xingguang) in its homeland. And today the manufacturer distributed images of the station wagon model. True, these are still pure renderings — the brand has not officially promised the appearance of a five-door in the Starlight range. Wuling probably wants to analyze the public's opinions and estimate potential demand.

By the way, the portfolio of the Chinese-American joint venture already included a modern station wagon, only it was made under a different brand – Baojun. Alas, the career of that “barn” turned out to be fleeting, it was not in demand: the model debuted in 2020 under the name Baojun RC-5W, in 2021 it was renamed Valli, and in the same year it finally left the Chinese market. Against this background, Wuling's foresight looks quite logical.

So, the promising Wuling Starlight station wagon differs from the sedan, of course, in the stern; in addition, the five-door has fewer chrome parts. Judging by the design of the front part, we are looking at a rechargeable hybrid (the four-door also comes in the form of an electric car, this modification looks different). A similar sedan has a 1.5 naturally aspirated gasoline engine (106 hp) and a 177-horsepower electric motor; there are two battery options to choose from — with a capacity of 9.5 or 20.5 kWh.

The four-door Starlight in China today costs from 88,800 yuan (about 1.1 million rubles at the current exchange rate), a station wagon for sure would have cost more.
