In Russia, the Japanese “Union for the Return of the Northern Territories”, the Ukrainian “Crimean Tatar Resource Center” and the Swiss “IndustriALL Global Union” were declared “undesirable” organizations; the human rights project “OVD-Info” drew attention to the list updated in January by the Ministry of Justice.
IndustriALL Global Union brings together affiliates three former global trade union federationsand monitors trade union rights in 140 countries. The IndustriALL website says that the union represents the interests of 50 million workers employed in the oil, mining and chemical industries, shipbuilding, mechanical engineering and other industries.
The Japanese organization's website says: “The problem in the Northern Territories is that that during the end of World War II, Soviet troops invaded the Four Northern Islands (Habomai archipelago, Shikotan Island, Kunashir Island and Iturup Island), which are the ancestral territories of our state.” The Union emphasizes that it advocates the return of the islands through “peaceful diplomatic negotiations.”
The “Crimean Tatar Resource Center” is a public organization that, according to the description on its website, since 2015 has been protecting the rights of the Crimean Tatars as the indigenous people of Crimea, helping political prisoners and “supporting cultural, educational, advocacy and democratic initiatives related to Crimea and the Crimean Tatar people.»
