CHISINAU, February 12 Moldovan farmers blocked about 150 vehicles on the border with Romania as part of a protest, the republic's police reported on the Telegram channel.
«120 large-capacity trucks, 16 large-capacity trucks with perishable products, five buses, four minibuses were blocked, 130 passengers could not continue their journey, 230 vehicles were redirected from the Leusheni checkpoint through other checkpoints,” the statement says.
The police, in turn, called on farmers not to interfere with the passage of transport, to respect the rights of other citizens and participants in the public movement, whose activities, including economic ones, were “turned upside down.”
On Monday Moldovan farmers blocked the Leuseni highway and blocked customs on the border with Romania, demanding that the authorities pay attention to their problems.
Protests began on February 8 in the south of Moldova, and then in other parts of the country. So, last weekend more than 30 tractors blocked the road at the Leuseni border post. As the Association «Power of Farmers» stated, farmers demand that the government immediately begin a dialogue with them and allocate $22 million as compensation to enterprises affected by the crisis.
In January, Moldovan agricultural producers called for a ban on road transport of grain and oilseeds from Ukraine and leave only railway ones. The reason for this was complaints from farmers who are losing money due to huge queues of trucks at the checkpoint on the Moldovan-Romanian border, most of which are from the former Soviet republic.
Last year, farmers protested from July to August, and in November We again arrived in Chisinau on tractors and stayed there until mid-December. They are asking the government to introduce a moratorium on debt fines for grain producers and expand financial assistance. In addition, farmers want to gain access to European funds and are seeking an increase in the National Agricultural Development Fund. According to them, these requirements must be met by the end of March.
