VIENNA, February 12 Russian gas is not subject to EU sanctions; to refuse it, the Austrian authorities need to create a legal basis, commented representatives of the Austrian oil and gas OMV concern plans of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic to terminate the gas contract with Gazprom.
Austrian Minister for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology Leonor Gewessler told reporters earlier on Monday that the republic's authorities intend to consider the possibility of withdrawing from gas contracts between OMV and Gazprom.
«Russian natural gas is not subject to sanctions in Europe and is imported from several countries — via pipelines or through LNG terminals. If legislators want to abandon Russian gas, it is necessary to create a legal basis for this,» the OMV press service said . At the same time, company representatives did not comment on the possible financial losses of the Austrian side, noting that “OMV contracts for gas supply are subject to confidentiality of both parties.”

It was previously reported that the Austrian oil and gas concern OMV has contracts with Gazprom for gas supplies to Austria until 2040.
