MOSCOW, February 22 At a meeting on Thursday, the Latvian Parliament banned the import of agricultural products from Russia and Belarus, the press service of the Latvian Seimas reported.
«The Seimas adopted amendments to the Law on agriculture and rural development, which prohibit the import of agricultural and feed products for consumption in Latvia from Russia and Belarus,” says a message on the parliament website.

It is noted that the ban does not apply to agricultural products transiting through Latvia to other EU countries.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture of Latvia, in the first 10 months of 2023, Latvia imported agricultural products and feed products from Russia for 280 million euros, 90% of which were feed, cereals, legumes and rapeseed oil.
At the beginning of February, protests were held throughout Latvia by farmers who demanded a ban on the import and transit of goods from Russia and Belarus , implementation of grain transit from Ukraine, restoration of the reduced VAT rate of 5% on Latvian fruits, berries and vegetables, reduction of bureaucracy in the agricultural sector.
