Washington Capitals continue to struggle to get into the zone playoffs of the National Hockey League (NHL). As part of the home series in the regular season, the capital hosted the Winnipeg Jets. The meeting ended in victory for Washington, despite Winnipeg's significant advantage in key statistical indicators.
After the first two periods of the game, the Jets outscored the Capitals in shots on target (20-11) and had more possession of the puck in the offensive zone. Less than ten minutes after this episode, Alexander no longer gave any reason for doubt. The Russian realized a one-on-one situation with the Jets goalkeeper and, having outplayed him, sent the projectile into the empty corner of the goal.

After the match with Winnipeg, Ovechkin's goal streak is five matches, in which he scored a total of eight goals. Moreover, in three games out of five, Alexander scored a double. Now the Russian striker has 172 matches in the NHL regular championships, in which he scored at least two goals. By this indicator, he is second only to Wayne Gretzky (189).

Thanks to another double, Ovechkin brought his total number of goals in the NHL regular season to 848 and reduced the gap from Gretzky in the main sniper standings of the league championships. Now it is 46 pucks. As for Washington, the Capitals beat out the Detroit Red Wings for a wild card spot in the NHL playoffs. The capital has 79 points after 70 matches, while Detroit has 78 points in 71 matches.
