The Freedom of Russia Legion, which consists of Russians fighting on the side of Ukraine, announced the death of its member Dani Akel.
The legion members did not provide the circumstances of his death.
Before the war 26-year-old Dani Tammam Akel, a Muscovite and graduate of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Russian State University for the Humanities, was tried for participating in a rally on January 23, 2021 in support of Alexei Navalny.
According to investigators, Akel came to the rally, formally violating the self-isolation regime due to coronavirus (Part 1 of Article 236 of the Criminal Code). He was charged three months after the rally, and he fully admitted his guilt. Because of this, Navalny’s associates were accused of incitement to violation of sanitary standards.
The Muscovite himself was fined 100 thousand rubles.
Akel told Spectrum magazine that after that, “in the winter of 2022,” fled through the Pskov region to Estonia, surrendered to border guards and spent four months in custody before receiving refugee status. After that, he joined the “Freedom of Russia” legion, with which he participated in forays into the Belgorod region.
Akel, under the call sign “Apostle,” was among the heroes of a video report by the British newspaper Times about the legion, released in February 2024. His open-faced photo was included in the preview video.
