Oil prices may rise due to Iran's attacks on Israel, expert said

MOSCOW, April 14Brent oil prices may jump to $100 per barrel in the short term against the backdrop of Iran’s attack on Israel, but this will be more of a speculative increase, and the further price situation will depend on the level of the conflict, said Alexander Frolov, deputy general director of the Institute of National Energy, editor-in-chief of InfoTEK.
Previously, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that Iran fired drones in its direction. The IDF reported that the air defense system and the armed forces themselves have been put on high alert.

On weekends, oil exchange trading is not conducted. They will only open on Monday. On Friday, Brent trading closed at $90.15 per barrel. According to the expert, the reaction of oil prices depends on how the situation develops on Sunday — “what news will be by Monday, such will be the prices.”

“But I believe that given the current situation, oil prices could reach $100 at the moment. Because the situation, to put it mildly, is non-standard. Despite the fact that everyone has been expecting something like this for forty years. I just said this about the short-term impact on prices. That is, against the backdrop of this kind of news, prices may soar. But this rise will be partly speculative, because it cannot now be supported by long-term factors,” Frolov commented.

Long-term factors that determine the level at which oil prices will be fixed will depend on how large-scale this conflict turns out to be, he noted. So, if it grows, then much attention will be paid to the reliability of oil supply and stability of supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. According to the expert, this is the main pain point of the world market in the Middle East, because 10-20% of all oil on the planet and about 20% of all liquefied natural gas flow through this strait.
«Accordingly, in this case we can say that the price of oil over the next week will be determined by the level of this conflict,» Frolov explained, noting that for now the situation is still of a local nature. If it acquires a regional scale, when hostilities affect the entire region, then the risks for the Strait of Hormuz will increase. The question will also arise about the state of oil fields in the conflict zone.
