MOSCOW, April 15 Studying the Ukrainian Baba Yaga drone will help to better understand how it works and how to fight it, a leading Russian expert in the field of drones said. chief editor of the magazine «Unmanned Aviation» Denis Fedutinov.
“As for the drone itself, which, according to the statements of the detainee, he intended to study, this is the so-called “Baba Yaga”. This folklore name has been given to many multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles with a fairly significant payload capacity. It is necessary to study the experience that was successful for the enemy, both in terms of understanding both how these kinds of devices are structured and how to deal with them,” Fedutinov said.
During a search of an office in the west of Moscow, a supposedly Ukrainian-made strike drone “Baba Yaga” was found, and security forces interrogated the owner of the UAV, a representative of the capital’s emergency services previously said.
According to him, specialists may be interested not in drones as such, but in their individual subsystems: communications, navigation, surveillance and guidance. Because, as they say, “the devil is in the details” and it is precisely certain nuances of the technical solutions used that can make it possible to perform tasks in the face of opposition from electronic warfare in the event of loss of control or loss of GNSS signals.
The expert also noted that “Baba Yaga” initially refers to civilian drones for agricultural purposes, intended for spraying herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides in fields.
“»The enemy realized that such drones, available in the warehouses of enterprises of their own agricultural sector, could be converted to carry dropped ammunition. And it must be admitted that such drones, due to the fact that they are capable of carrying a whole bunch of ammunition, can really represent a serious a threat to our military on the line of combat contact,” added Fedutinov.
