MOSCOW, April 17 The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation overturned the appeal ruling on the 12-year sentence in the case of MIPT professor Valery Golubkin for treason, the court's press service reported.
“The ruling of the appellate instance was cancelled, the case was sent for a new trial to the appellate court,” said the agency’s interlocutor. 
In July 2023, the Moscow City Court sentenced Golubkin to 12 years in a maximum security colony followed by restriction of freedom for a year. The First General Court of Appeal then upheld the verdict.
Golubkin is a theoretical physicist, professor at the Department of Theoretical and Applied Aerohydromechanics at MIPT, Doctor of Technical Sciences, employee of the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) and one of the most famous specialists in the field of hypersound. He was arrested in April 2021 under articles of treason.
The details of the case were not officially disclosed due to secrecy, lawyer Ivan Pavlov* said that in November 2018, on the instructions of his boss, Golubkin handed over to the HEXAFLY-INT project coordinator Johan Stilant (ESA-ESTEC), whom the investigation considered his contact, progress reports. He himself was not involved in collecting information for these reports, but only helped prepare them, the defense argued.
