Scientist warns of high-grade flares on the Sun

< br />
MOSCOW, April 18 Solar flares of the highest grade X may occur in the coming days, energy accumulation is observed in the southern hemisphere of the star, facing the Earth, said Sergei, head of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences Bogachev.
“Solar activity last increased sharply at the end of March 2024, when, among other things, a G4 level magnetic storm was recorded (one of the largest in the last two decades). Around the beginning of April, the number of solar flares sharply decreased. Apparently, this break is coming to an end. Outbreaks of the highest score X are possible in the coming days,” Bogachev said.
< br />He clarified that the accumulation of flare energy is now observed in the southern hemisphere of the Sun, on the side facing the Earth. The most dangerous, he said, seem to be April 19 and 20; on these days, the largest active centers will be located exactly on the Sun-Earth line.

Solar flares, depending on the power of X-ray radiation, are divided into five classes: A, B, C, M and X.

Previously, scientists reported that the increasing frequency of flares and an increase in their power indicates a gradual approach of the Sun to the peak of activity, which could presumably occur as early as mid-2024, although, according to some forecasts, it could be shifted to 2025.
Solar flares can cause magnetic storms on Earth, which in turn cause disruptions in the operation of energy systems, and also affect the migration routes of birds and animals. Severe storms cause disruptions to shortwave communications and navigation systems, as well as voltage failures in industrial networks. Also, increased solar activity can expand the geography of aurora observations. There is no clear answer yet as to whether magnetic storms affect human health.
