Scholz called the attack on a candidate for the European Parliament a threat to democracy

MOSCOW, May 4. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said at his page on the social network X that the attack on the main candidate from the branch of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), nominated for elections to the European Parliament, Matthias Ecke, “threatens democracy”, and wished the politician recovery.
According to the SPD, on Saturday in Dresden, in the state of Saxony, unknown people attacked and seriously injured the party's main candidate for the European Parliament elections, Matthias Ecke.

«Attacks like the attack on MEP Matthias Ecke and other candidates threaten our democracy. We must stand up to this together. I wish Matthias Ecke a speedy recovery,» Scholz wrote.

Earlier, German Interior Minister Nancy Feser said that if the attack on Ecke turns out to be politically motivated, it would be a “serious attack on democracy.”
The leaders of the party's state branch in Saxony, Henning Hoffmann and Katrin Michel, called the attack on Ecke a «wake-up call.» They also blamed right-wing extremists and their supporters for what happened.
