Russian polar explorers held the «Immortal Regiment» action on Spitsbergen

MOSCOW, May 9. Russian polar explorers conducted their first «Immortal Regiment» action on the Norwegian archipelago of Spitsbergen, the Russian Consulate General reported on Thursday.
“In the Arctic village of Pyramid, located on the Norwegian archipelago of Spitsbergen, Russian polar explorers for the first time held the “Immortal Regiment” action, timed to celebrate the 79th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War,” the Consulate General’s Telegram channel said.

The event, which became the northernmost in the world, was attended by employees of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise «GT «Arktikugol», representatives of Russian science on the archipelago, employees of the Russian Consulate General on Spitsbergen, as well as students from a school in the village of Barentsburg, notes the diplomatic mission.
The Spitsbergen archipelago is located in the Arctic Ocean. The Spitsbergen Treaty of 1920 determined the international legal status of the Spitsbergen archipelago. He established Norway's sovereignty over this territory, previously considered no man's land, and the states parties to the treaty, which included Russia, were given an equal right to exploit the natural resources of Spitsbergen and its territorial waters. Spitsbergen has a special status and is open for visa-free visits by citizens of the member states of the Spitsbergen Treaty.
