WASHINGTON, May 14. Elections in Ukraine will take place when citizens will agree that conditions allow, said US State Department head Antony Blinken.
As Blinken said at a meeting with students at the Polytechnic Institute in Kyiv, “all Ukrainians will be able to exercise their right to vote… as soon as Ukrainians agree that conditions allow.” The Secretary of State added that Washington is working with Kiev to strengthen election infrastructure. The event was broadcast by the State Department.
Presidential elections in Ukraine were to take place on March 31, 2024, and the inauguration of the newly elected head of state would take place in May. However, the elections were canceled due to martial law and general mobilization. Vladimir Zelensky stated that elections now are “not the right time,” emphasizing that this issue should be put to rest. According to the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin will analyze the situation in connection with the expiration of Zelensky's term of office in May in order to declare its position.
In 2023, elections of deputies to the Verkhovna Rada were supposed to take place, they were postponed for an indefinite period.
