Nissan plans to delay production of green sedans in the US, replacing them with crossovers

The production of all-electric four-doors under the Nissan and Infiniti brands was expected to begin in late 2026 at the Canton (Missouri) plant ).

The Japanese company Nissan presented its long-term strategy Ambition 2030 back in the fall of 2021, and once again updated it at the end of March of this year. So, a couple of months ago the manufacturer unveiled a business plan called The Arc. As Kolesa.ru previously reported, under this plan, sales should grow by 1 million vehicles, and operating profit should grow by more than 6% by the end of the 2026 financial year. Note that The Arc plan includes not only the Nissan brand, but also Infiniti.

The implementation of the strategy involves the release of over 30 new and restyled models of both brands around the world. Specifically for the North American market, seven “all-new models” were initially envisaged, which should be introduced over the next three years. At the same time, the indicated quantity includes serial hybrids with a proprietary e-Power installation, as well as rechargeable hybrids.

Apparently, there have been further changes in the manufacturer’s plan for the States. According to Automotive News, Nissan is now making adjustments to its plan: it is expected that this will increase the competitiveness of the Japanese brand's products in the American market. While the manufacturer refines its strategy, the development of two all-electric sedans has been paused.

It was assumed that their production would start at the end of 2026 at the Nissan plant in Canton (Missouri, USA). It is expected that the models will still be put on the conveyor, but this will happen later; the new deadline will be announced later. According to preliminary data, one of the four-doors will be produced under the Nissan brand, the second – under the Infiniti brand (this production model may be based on the Infiniti Vision QE concept).

At the facilities of the same enterprise, the company also intends to launch the production of two all-electric crossovers. Now they, apparently, will outstrip the new Nissan and Infiniti sedans in the American market. There are no details about these SUVs yet. In addition, another “green” SUV, comparable in size to the current Nissan Rogue (in other markets sold under the name X-Trail), will be registered on the same site.

It is possible that Nissan decided to postpone the development of electric trains due to the fact that the market The number of “green” cars is not growing as fast as manufacturers expected. Because of this, changes in development strategy have already been announced by Volkswagen, Toyota, Renault, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis and General Motors.

Currently, the Canton plant produces three models of the Nissan brand: Titan and Frontier pickups, as well as the Altima sedan. It is known that production of the Titan will be completed this coming summer, and the four-door, according to the plan, should say goodbye to the model range in 2025.
