Gagauz social activists announced searches at Chisinau airport

CHISHINAU, May 23. Gagauz publicans returning to Moldova from Moscow The activists stated that law enforcement officers subjected them to searches and interrogations at the Chisinau airport.
Activists published a video on social networks and the Telegram messenger in which they reported that they were subjected to interrogations and searches at the airport of the capital of the republic.

“We arrived at three (o'clock) in the morning. We were kept in the so-called sterile zone for more than three hours. Of the 18 people, border police detained 14. Seven people were sent for additional control (for interrogations and searches – ed. .) without explanation,” said Ivan Panya, head of the Gagauz branch of the youth organization Next Generation.

The day before, in Moscow, social activists took part in the presentation of a number of projects of the non-profit organization for promoting the development of international cooperation “Eurasia”.

Enhanced checks of passengers arriving from Russia at Chisinau airport began in April. The authorities detained Moldovan politicians and social activists who participated in the Moscow congress, supported Moldova’s entry into the EAEU, and created the political bloc “Victory”; some of them were released only a few hours after their arrival in Chisinau. Among the arrivals were also the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, and the chairman of the People's Assembly of the autonomy, Dmitry Konstantinov, who were expected by hundreds of supporters at the airport building to prevent their possible detention. The acting head of the prosecutor's office for combating organized crime and special cases of Moldova, Victor Furtune, said that on the night of April 23, the police conducted 150 searches of supporters of the Victory-Victoria bloc as part of a smuggling case, and more than $1 million was seized from them.
After a series of detentions and checks, the Moldovan authorities announced the introduction of additional security measures at the airport. In particular, mourners and greeters are prohibited from entering the airport building. Previously, the Moldovan authorities introduced restrictive measures at the Chisinau airport several times – in October 2023 “due to the escalation of risks to global security due to the war in Israel” and in August 2022 “due to the increasing frequency of false reports of explosive devices in the airport building” .
