MOSCOW, June 18 State Duma deputy Sultan Khamzaev came up with the idea of canceling the trademarks of companies that left Russia, and then banning their registration for 20 years.
“
"Currently there are no amendments to directly prohibit foreign brands from legally returning to the Russian market. I propose to consider the possibility of canceling the trademarks of departed companies in Russia, and then ban them from registering trademarks in Russia for 20 years,” he said.
According to the deputy, it is important to assess the intentions of those Western companies that have decided to return, and the potential harm that their products could cause to Russian society.
«I propose to start with Coca-Cola and Starbucks <…>. Recently, information appeared that the American company Coca-Cola has decided to return to Russia and has already begun re-registration of trademarks. However, in fact, the company is in no hurry to sell goods on the Russian market,” Khamzaev added.
He noted that he receives many requests from Russians who are outraged that some companies, after a high-profile departure, have decided to quietly legally return.
“According to various studies, the majority of Russians support the development of their own production and do not expect the return of Western brands. They believe that domestic products are no longer inferior to foreign ones,” the deputy concluded.
The other day it became known that back in April Coca-Cola The Company submitted three applications to Rospatent to register trademarks of the Coca-Cola, Sprite and Fanta brands, which it withdrew from the Russian market in 2022. At the end of May, a similar application was received from Starbucks Corporation. Both companies left Russia in 2022 amid increasing anti-Russian sanctions. Starbucks owned more than one hundred coffee shops throughout the country. Also in 2022, Russian entrepreneurs became the new business owners; they launched the Stars Coffee chain of coffee shops in place of Starbucks.
