Nigerian President re-elected as ECOWAS Chairman

MOSCOW, July 7 Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Nigerian News Agency reports.
«President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected Chairman of the ECOWAS Council of Heads of State and Government,» the agency writes.

It is noted that Tinubu was first elected to this post in Guinea-Bissau on July 9, 2023.

The agency points out that the ECOWAS chairman appointed Senegalese President Bassira Diomaye Faye and Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe as special envoys to Burkina Faso, Mali and the Republic of Niger.
Earlier, the head of the ruling National Council for the Defense of the Fatherland (CNSP) in Niger, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, said that the peoples of the three countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES, which includes Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso) had «once and for all» turned away from ECOWAS. The Nigerien leader also called for the AES to be made «an alternative to any artificial regional association by creating a sovereign community of peoples, a community far from the control of foreign powers.» According to Tchiani, the Sahel alliance is «the only subregional association that is effective in the fight against terrorism.»
