ST. PETERSBURG, July 12. Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko said that it is necessary to create an alternative ranking of universities in the BRICS countries, noting that the existing rankings were created by the West and are formed biasedly.
The Tenth BRICS Parliamentary Forum is taking place at the Tauride Palace in St. Petersburg from July 11 to 12.
«Another ambitious task is to create an alternative rating system for educational organizations of the BRICS countries. Currently existing international ratings are often formed biasedly,» Matvienko said at a plenary session during the BRICS Parliamentary Forum.
She invited parliamentarians of the BRICS countries to join in the development and implementation of new criteria for evaluating educational institutions. According to Matvienko, Russia also intends to promote the creation of a mechanism for recognizing qualifications and educational diplomas between the BRICS countries.
«Our country has positive experience in using the domestic ranking of the best universities in Russia and the world. This experience, like the experience of other BRICS partner countries, can form the basis for the development of new unbiased rankings,» the senator added.
Russia assumed the chairmanship of BRICS on January 1 of this year. The year began with the accession of new members to the organization — in addition to the Russian Federation, Brazil, India, China and South Africa, it now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Russia's BRICS Chairmanship is held under the motto of strengthening multilateralism for equitable global development and security. As part of its chairmanship, the Russian Federation organizes more than 200 political, economic and social events.
