Mazda EZ-6 liftback made together with Changan to replace the “six”: production has begun

The production of the five-door has been launched in China — this country will become the main market for the model. The new product will be offered with a hybrid installation or as a full-fledged electric car. Sales will start before the end of this year.

The world premiere of the Mazda EZ-6 liftback with frameless doors took place in April at the Beijing Auto Show. As you might guess, the model is addressed primarily to China. Moreover, the five-door was not created from scratch: it was developed together with the Changan company, based on the Deepal SL03 liftback (the Deepal brand — also known as Shenlan or Deep Blue — belongs to Changan). And today, July 17, it was announced that the first EZ-6 car rolled off the assembly line at the Changan Mazda JV plant located in Nanjing, China. By the way, the liftback is considered the successor to the Mazda Atenza, which has already left the Chinese market: this is the name there of the model, which in other countries is known as the Mazda 6.

Like the donor “Chinese”, the Mazda EZ-6 will be available as a hybrid or electric car. The brand itself has not yet disclosed details about the filling. However, in the spring the main data was leaked by the Ministry of Industry of the People's Republic of China. According to the certificate, the electric liftback has one 258-horsepower engine on the rear axle. And the hybrid received a 1.5 naturally aspirated gasoline engine with a power of 98 hp. (it works only as a generator) and a 218-horsepower electric motor (also on the rear axle). Deepal SL03 also has versions with similar technology. The original Chinese electric car has a battery capacity of 58.89 kWh or 66.8 kWh (2024 model), the hybrid Deepal is equipped with a battery of 18.99 or 28.39 kWh.

As for the exterior design, the Mazda EZ-6 has its own, although externally the model of the Japanese brand has something in common with the SL03. Features include narrow LED running lights and compact headlight units located underneath them, single-piece taillights, hidden door handles and a retractable spoiler. The length of the EZ-6 is 4921 mm, width – 1890 mm, height – 1485 mm, wheelbase – 2895 mm. For comparison, the dimensions of the Chinese source: 4820/1890/1480 mm, the distance between the axles is 2900 mm.

The interior is designed in the same vein as the Deepal liftback. Inside, separate screens for the instrument panel and multimedia system, a two-spoke steering wheel and a two-story central tunnel were installed. The Mazda EZ-6 equipment list also includes atmospheric lighting, a glass roof, high-resolution all-round cameras, and a parking assistant (plus a remote parking function).

The new Mazda product will be released on the Chinese market before the end of this year, prices have not yet been announced. Deepal SL03 now costs from 139,900 yuan (about 1.7 million rubles at the current exchange rate).

Plans to sell the Mazda EZ-6 outside the Middle Kingdom have not been officially announced. Meanwhile, not so long ago, a Japanese company registered the “6e” index — already in Europe. It is quite possible that the outdated Mazda 6 will also have a replacement there, but there is no information yet on whether the European model will have something in common with the liftback for China.
