MOSCOW, July 16 The White House if it comes to power Donald Trump and Senator J.D. Vance, announced as a vice-presidential candidate, will try to move away from the Ukrainian conflict and European problems in general, perhaps he will be ready to reduce tensions with Russia in order to focus on China, suggested in a conversation with Grigory Yarygin, Associate Professor of the Department of American Studies at St. Petersburg State University .
According to him, Vance's candidacy says that if the Republicans come to power, the White House will distance itself as much as possible from European issues and shift its attention to the Asia-Pacific region.
«They are both not ready to spend a lot of resources on Ukraine, but this is not because they are ready to improve relations with Russia. They are ready, perhaps, to lower the degree of tension with Russia, but in order to switch first of all to confront China,” the agency’s interlocutor said.
He believes that the Trump administration with Vice President Vance will try to delegate the task of supporting Kyiv to European countries, although this will not mean a refusal to support Kyiv from the United States.
Earlier at the Republican National Convention, presidential candidate Donald Trump announced that he had invited Ohio Senator Vance to serve as vice president if he wins the November election. A little later, the Republican Party convention nominated Vance for this post.
Vance is 39 years old, married, three children. He is a graduate of the prestigious Yale Law School, and worked in investment funds in conjunction with the famous Republican donor and billionaire Peter Thiel. He became a senator in January 2023.
Vance is also known for speaking out extensively on the conflict in Ukraine, criticizing multibillion-dollar American military aid to that country and calling for negotiations with Russia. He said that Kiev’s declared goal of restoring the 1991 borders is unrealistic, and a settlement requires consolidating Ukrainian neutrality and freezing territorial disputes.
