YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, July 18 Rosaviation finds the use of satellites to control drones promising, and sees potential in synergy with radio communications, it told reporters on the sidelines of the design and educational intensive “Archipelago” -2024″ Deputy Head of the Department Andrey Potemkin.
Previously, as part of a joint experiment by JSC «Satellite System «Gonets» (part of the state corporation «Roscosmos») and the company «Geoscan», which was carried out at the design and educational intensive «Archipelago-2024» in the Sakhalin region, location data, telemetry drone data to the data center of the Gonets satellite system, and a command was sent via satellite to force the UAV to return to the launch site. This is the first such successful experiment in Russia.
“We need to use all the possibilities. We are talking about radio communications, we are talking about the possibility of relaying control channels for an unmanned aerial vehicle, and, of course, satellites here always have their advantage, including in terms of coverage, but not always in terms of speed of signal transmission and integrity and other information parameters we will find a balance, and we will definitely solve some problems with their (satellites — ed.) help,» Potemkin said.
It is also worth taking into account the scale of Russia, where a significant part of the territory is not covered by other types of communications, Alexey Yuretsky, CEO of the Geoscan company, previously said. In his opinion, the development of satellite systems for monitoring the location of aircraft is becoming fundamentally important — due to their multifunctionality, satellite systems are much more promising and cost-effective in terms of investment than ground-based infrastructure, he said.
