MOSCOW, July 19 The losses of the global banking system due to the failure of Microsoft can be estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars, tens airlines suffered millions, and less serious financial consequences will be felt by telecommunications providers and media companies, said Ruslan Permyakov, deputy director of the NTI Competence Center «Trusted Interaction Technologies» based on TUSUR.
On Friday morning, a global failure of Windows-based equipment began, which affected telecom operators, banks and airlines around the world. The American company CrowdStrike confirmed that a global failure in Windows occurred due to its update for the Falcon Sensor cybersecurity application.
«Banks have encountered problems accessing their systems, which could affect transaction processing, online banking and other financial transactions. I think this is hundreds of millions around the world,» the expert answered the question of what financial losses companies from different sectors of the world economy.
“Many airlines have faced flight cancellations and delays due to these problems. This can lead to significant financial losses due to canceled flights and compensation to passengers. Around the world this is probably tens of millions of dollars,” Permyakov added.
Telecommunications providers and media companies also suffered, the expert adds. Some TV channels were unable to go on air, and Internet providers faced problems accessing their systems. “The losses here may be insignificant,” he believes at the same time.
Assessing the exact losses of the global economy, according to Permyakov, is difficult, but they can be significant — these are not only direct financial losses, but also reputational and long-term consequences for companies and industries.
