CAIRO, July 23Archaeologists have discovered 38 bronze coins from the Ptolemaic era, ceramic vessels, funerary amulets and figurines during excavations in the province of Dumyat in northern Egypt, the country's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities reported. .
As noted in a statement from the ministry, the findings confirm that in ancient times Dumyat, located where the Nile River flows into the Mediterranean Sea, played an important role in trade with other Mediterranean cities.
“An Egyptian archaeological mission from the Supreme Council of Antiquities discovered 63 adobe burials and several simple burials,” the ministry said in a statement.
It is reported that excavations took place in the area of the Tell ed-Deir cemetery in the city of Dumyat el-Gedida.
The head of the Department of Egyptian Antiquities, Ayman Ashmawi, said that the mission found a number of funerary amulets, figurines, clay pots, ceramic dishes, as well as 38 bronze coins from the Ptolemaic era inside the burials.
The head of the mission, Qutb Fauzi, emphasized that the mission was also able to discover a large cemetery made of adobe bricks, which contained a number of burials of a high social level.
