Avito Auto and Avito Travel conducted a survey, during which they examined the experience of traveling by car. It turned out that 50% of Russians have experience traveling around Russia by car, and the most common type of car body for these purposes is a sedan.
As the survey showed, 50% of Russians have experience traveling around Russia by car. Of these, 14% travel by car once every six months and 23% once a year or less. Young people aged 18-24 years travel by car the most — 59% of them travel with varying frequency. Muscovites are ahead of residents of other regions in terms of road travel activity: 15% of Muscovites make trips more than twice a month. By region, residents of the Southern Federal District (16%), North Caucasus Federal District (15%) and Central Federal District (14%) travel by car more than others.
29% of Russians have not traveled by car around the country, but would like to try. The highest proportion of such people is in the age group of 35-54 years: it is 32%. Most of all, residents of cities with a population of less than 100 thousand would like to go on such a trip: 33% of them chose this answer, while among residents of the two capitals only 21% did. Among the regions, residents of the Far Eastern Federal District (41%), Siberian Federal District (36%) and Ural Federal District (33%) are the most dreaming of traveling by car, although they do not yet have such experience.

As destinations for road trips, 39% of respondents choose resort regions — Krasnodar Territory, Crimea, etc. Most often, this option is noted by residents of the Central Federal District (42%), Southern Federal District (68%) and North Caucasus Federal District (56%). Almost the same number – 38% – choose non-tourist destinations, including their hometown. This choice is more common among residents of the Northwestern Federal District (42%), Far Eastern Federal District (45%) and Siberian Federal District (45%). Another 38% of respondents prefer the nearest suburb; the leaders here are residents of the Far Eastern Federal District (45%) and the Siberian Federal District (46%).

88% of those who make such trips prefer to travel by personal or family car. The share of motorists who chose a rented car for this purpose is much smaller. The majority of people who like to rent a car are among Muscovites – 6%; among St. Petersburg residents their share is only 2%. But in both capitals the share of those who travel using carsharing is quite high: this option was chosen by 5% of survey participants in Moscow and 4% in St. Petersburg.
In Russia as a whole, it is quite large ( 8%) the share of those who use another option — a ride, a work vehicle or a car of friends and relatives, including traveling with them.
Among the types of cars for travel, Russians single out the sedan — 26%; men choose this option more often than women (30% versus 23%). In second place is an SUV, which accounted for 25%. This variant is more common among women than among men (29% vs. 19%). In third place is crossover with a share of 22%. It is more often chosen by men (24% versus 20%).
For young people under the age of 24, the most popular type of car for travel is an SUV — it was noted by 27% of respondents in this category. The same choice is made by people 45-54 years old (26%) and 55-64 years old (25%). People 25-44 years old prefer a sedan: 32% of respondents under the age of 34 years and 26% — 35-44 years old. The older generation aged 65+ chooses a crossover (21%).
