MOSCOW, July 25 Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad in the Kremlin the day before, a correspondent reported.
«
«Dear Mr. President, I am very glad to see you. We have the opportunity to discuss the entire range of our relations, we have not seen each other for a long time,» the Russian leader said.
Putin noted that he was very interested in hearing Assad's opinion on the situation in the region. He added that it has a tendency to escalate.
«This also directly concerns Syria,» the Russian president emphasized.
Putin also added that there are promising areas in trade and economic relations between Russia and Syria, but many questions remain in this area.
In turn, Assad recalled that today's visit coincides with the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the states.
«Over the past decades, our countries have gone through very difficult trials. Of course, these decades have witnessed complex transformation processes within our countries. However, over all the decades, relations between our countries have maintained a level of trust, and this is an indicator of the maturity of our peoples,» he said.
The Syrian president added that, given the events taking place in the world and the Eurasian region, the meeting of the two leaders «seems very important for discussing all the details of the development of these events, for discussing possible prospects and scenarios.»
The last time Assad flew to Moscow was a year ago — in March 2023.
Media attention is focused on a possible meeting between Assad and Turkish leader Recep Erdogan, which, as reported, could take place in Moscow in August. The Kremlin said that Russia, like other countries, is interested in improving relations between Turkey and Syria.
