Two people are missing after a temporary dam broke on the White Sea-Baltic Canal, the administration reports EMERCOM of Karelia.
Initially, six people were considered missing, but four were later found. These are two adults and two children, including a 14-year-old teenager and an elderly man, writes Karelia Governor Artur Parfenchikov.
Later, the State Committee of Karelia for Life Support and Safety reported that one person died due to the breakthrough.
On the morning of July 29, a sand dam installed «during reconstruction» at the 11th lock of the White Sea-Baltic Canal washed away, Parfenchikov reported. Eleven people are registered at the lock, and the «Baltic» dacha cooperative was at risk of flooding.
According to the EMERCOM, nine people were injured due to the breakthrough, three houses were destroyed. Rescuers continue to search for two missing people. According to the safety committee, they are women.
On July 26, heavy rains caused the dam on the Kliolim reservoir in the Chelyabinsk region to burst. In the village of Kiolim, all 20 houses were flooded, and more than 200 people were evacuated from several settlements. According to the authorities, no one was hurt.
