IBA Secretary General: Passport is the only criterion for admission to the women's Olympic tournament

MOSCOW, August 5, Andrey Simonenko. A passport, in accordance with the rules of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), is the only criterion for admission to the women's tournament of the Games, said the Secretary General of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Chris Roberts.
Earlier, the IOC approved the participation of Iman Khelif from Algeria and the representative of Taiwan Lin Yuting in the women's tournament of the Games, despite the fact that at the 2023 World Championships in India (held under the auspices of the IBA) they were unable to pass a gender test, which showed the presence of XY chromosomes and elevated testosterone levels in their bodies.

«We sent a letter to the IOC and the criteria by which we deemed these athletes ineligible to compete. The IOC received this information but did nothing with it because, according to their rules, the only criterion for access is a passport,» Roberts said at a press conference.

Earlier, Khelif called on people to adhere to the Olympic principles and refrain from bullying. The Algerian has already reached the semi-finals in the 66 kg weight category, securing an Olympic medal. In the 1/8 finals, she defeated Italian Angela Carini, who gave up after 46 seconds of the fight, and later announced her retirement. In the quarterfinals, Khelif defeated Hungarian Luca Hamori. The broadcast of the fight caught the moment in which Hamori complained to her coach: «I can't beat him, he's a man.» Lin Yuting also reached the semi-finals in the 57 kg category. After the quarter-final match, Bulgarian Svetlana Staneva refused to shake her hand.
