Updated first-generation Volkswagen Amarok hits the market

The restyling did not affect the technology of the mid-size pickup truck of the German brand. The new product is already on sale in Argentina, the prices are known.

The German company Volkswagen began producing the Amarok pickup in 2010, it underwent an update in 2016. As part of the partnership with Ford, a second-generation mid-size truck was developed, which debuted in 2022 (it is the closest relative of the «third» Ford Ranger). Production of the «second» Amarok is established at the American company's plant located in South Africa. Despite this, it was decided to keep the first generation model, which VW developed independently, in service.

The production of such a pickup truck is established at the Volkswagen plant in Argentina. At the same time, the local office of the brand announced the development of a modernized version of the «first» Amarok back in 2022. Spy shots of the updated truck appeared on the Internet at the end of last year, and the manufacturer distributed the first official photos and videos at the beginning of last month, at the same time the refreshed pickup was put into production.

During the new restyling, the Amarok received a new radiator grille: now it is visually divided in two by a voluminous horizontal silver element with protrusions. The changes also affected the head optics: now the headlights are connected by a luminous strip (in the area of the LED daytime running lights). The even fresher «first» pickup got a new front bumper with vertical fog light blocks, and the stern was decorated with a large inscription in the form of the model name.

The interior has been updated with a modern infotainment system with a larger touchscreen, with central air vents still located on either side. The models retain analog instruments and the same three-spoke steering wheel. A new element has appeared in the interior – Safer Tag: it looks like a small round clock installed in the center of the upper part of the dashboard.

It is actually related to safety systems, its task is to notify/warn drivers about lane changes, about the possibility of a frontal collision, about the appearance of pedestrians and cyclists. In addition, it controls the maximum speed of movement and has a speed limit indicator.

The updated first-generation Volkswagen Amarok has not been touched in terms of technology. So it is still available with 2.0 TDI turbodiesels in two power options – 140 hp (maximum torque – 340 Nm) and 180 hp (420 Nm); as well as a V6 3.0 TDI with a power of 258 hp (580 Nm). The base engine is paired with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission; the more powerful engine is only available with an automatic. In the first case, the drive can be rear or all-wheel drive, and the Amarok with a 3.0-liter V6 is offered only with the 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

Such a pickup is unlikely to appear outside of Latin American countries. Sales have already started in Argentina. The starting price of the refreshed first Amarok here is 38,046,500 pesos (equivalent to about 3.49 million rubles at the current exchange rate), and for the top version they ask for at least 66,193,000 pesos (about 6.08 million rubles).
