MOSCOW, August 8 Security at the Rooppur NPP construction site has been strengthened amid the events in Bangladesh. This is necessary to ensure the safety of Russian specialists working there, Russian Ambassador to Dhaka Alexander Mantytsky said on the Russia 24 TV channel.
«The difficult situation (in Bangladesh) is of obvious concern to us. Both from the point of view of ensuring the safety of our specialists working at the construction site, and in relation to disruptions in the normal functioning of the country's facilities and infrastructure, and the preservation and continuation of logistics chains,» he said.
Protests and demonstrations began in Dhaka and across the country after the announcement of a multi-day «non-cooperation action» with authorities, which was started on Sunday by the organization «Student Movement against Discrimination». Clashes between students holding anti-government positions, the police and government supporters escalated into riots.
«Of course, priority attention is given to the safety of our (Russian) specialists. Measures have been taken to strengthen the security of the facility, the delivery of food and drinking water,» the ambassador added.
In December 2024, Rosatom plans to launch the reactor (physical start-up) of the first power unit of the Rooppur NPP in Bangladesh, which is being built with Russia's participation.
The first NPP in Bangladesh, Rooppur, with two VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2.4 thousand megawatts, is being built 160 kilometers from the capital, Dhaka. A Russian design with VVER-1200 reactors, successfully implemented at two power units of the Novovoronezh NPP, has been selected for the station. This is an evolutionary project of generation III+, which fully meets international safety requirements.
