On Wednesday, August 7, during the race, Girma hit the barrier with his foot and fell hard, after which he was unable to get up and finish the performance. He was carried off the path on a stretcher.
As the publication notes, the athlete came to his senses at the Stade de France first aid station, after which he was taken to the hospital for further examination. At the moment, the athlete’s health is not in danger.

Girma is the silver medalist of the 2020 Games in Tokyo and the current holder of the world record for the distance — 7 minutes 52.11 seconds. The Moroccan Sofiane El-Bakkali became the Paris Olympic champion in steeplechase on Wednesday.
