MOSCOW, August 8 Russian leader Vladimir Putin congratulated Vietnamese President To Lam by telephone on his election as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the Kremlin press service reported.
«During the telephone conversation, Russian President Vladimir Putin warmly congratulated President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam To Lam on his election as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and wished him success in his party and government activities,» the Kremlin noted.
In addition, Putin and the Vietnamese president confirmed their mutual commitment to further strengthening their strategic partnership and agreed to continue personal contacts.
«Satisfaction was expressed with the progress of the implementation of the agreements, achieved following the state visit of the President of the Russian Federation to Vietnam on June 20, as well as the interaction of the two countries in the international arena, including taking into account Russia's chairmanship of BRICS,» the press service emphasized.
To Lam became the third leader of the country after the founder of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, who combines the highest party and highest government positions in Vietnam. Before him, the post of General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party was combined with the post of President of Vietnam for some time, in 2018-2021, by Nguyen Phu Trong, who died on July 19, 2024. After the death of his predecessor, President To Lam temporarily served as acting head of the Vietnamese Communist Party.
