New study to help identify insomnia and susceptibility in humans.
< p>Scientists from the University of Tokyo, Japan, led by Machiko Katori, studied the data of thousands of Britons, which are stored in the British Biobank, a special repository of various medical information. As a result, scientists identified 16 different types of sleep in humans, reports the Chronicle.info with reference to Focus.
To determine the patterns of wakefulness and sleep, the participants in the experiments wore special bracelets with sensors that responded to the movement of their hands sleeping people for several days.
Scientists from the University of Tokyo, based on the data obtained, found that our sleep is quite diverse and consists of different cycles.
Researchers have identified 5 main types of sleep, and some of them have been divided into separate categories and subcategories.
- The first type of sleep is characterized by insomnia during prolonged sleep, but with frequent waking up in the middle of the night.
- The fifth type of sleep is present in people who sleep well all night and do not sleep during the day.

With regard to sleep types 2,3 and 4, scientists have divided them into separate categories and subcategories.
- 2a — this category of sleep is for people who do not have a regular schedule to sleep well and this may be associated with shift work.
- 2b is intermittent sleep during short sleep duration in general.
- 3a is the sleep category for people who suffer from insomnia with normal sleep duration
- 3b is the sleep category for people who suffer from insomnia with short sleep duration.
- 4a is a category of sleep when people try to sleep for 24 hours, but they do not always succeed. This is a condition that precedes insomnia.
Also, scientists have identified separate subcategories for 3b and 4b, which show different characteristics of intermittent sleep.
- 3b-1 is a subcategory people who sleep deeply for a while, but then cannot fall asleep after waking up.
- 3b-2 is a subcategory of people with restless sleep who often wake up and cannot fall asleep for several hours.
In sleep subcategory 4b, people with early insomnia often wake up and fall asleep in the middle of the night. It can also occur during the morning and evening hours.
«Insomnia is a problem that can and sometimes does affect people's mental and physical health. Our research shows that it is possible to detect the first signs of insomnia and prevent subsequent negative consequences. But we need more research to refine our results», says Katori.
