The Ministry of Justice entered the Chechen «People's Movement Adat» into the register of extremist organizations on the basis of a decision of the Supreme Court of Chechnya dated May 12. This is stated on the agency's website.
Adat is known on the 1ADAT telegram channel — it has about 40,000 subscribers. The channel positions itself as a «popular movement» against the current leadership of Chechnya — almost all the posts are devoted to sharp criticism of Kadyrov or stories about the kidnappings and murders of local residents. The movement team consists of more than 30 people. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, they also document the actions of the military from Chechnya participating in the war.
In January, the Zavodskoy District Court of Grozny recognized several publications of the Telegram channel as extremist, and later banned the movement's website and other accounts. In January 2022, the security forces took Zarema Musaeva, the mother of the activist and the wife of the former Chechen judge Saydi Yangulbaev, from Nizhny Novgorod to Grozny, without taking insulin on the road, and a criminal case was brought against her for using violence against a police officer. Since then, she has been in a pre-trial detention center.
The rest of the Yangulbaev family — Saydi, Ibragim and his brother Abubakar left Russia, fearing for their lives. The head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov and the Chechen security forces threatened them and accused them of terrorism. In February, a rally was held in Grozny, the participants of which burned and trampled on the portraits of the Yangulbaevs.
