File photoMOSCOW, July 31 British Prime Ministerial candidate Foreign Secretary Liz Truss told the Telegraph newspaper that she would not allow a new referendum on Scottish independence if she was elected Prime Minister. "Scottish nationalists have agreed that their referendum is a once-in-a-generation opportunity, and I will push for it…I will work to strengthen our entire union. As Prime Minister, I will do what is necessary and right to protect our union, as I have already done with regard to the Northern Ireland Protocol … I am quite sure that there will be no second referendum on Scottish independence in my presence, ”said Truss.
Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon previously announced a proposal to hold a referendum on Scottish independence from the UK on 19 October 2023. Sturgeon has previously spoken of her intention to hold another vote in 2023, but Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly stated that he will not allow a second referendum, since the people of this part of the United Kingdom already expressed their will in 2014.
