Mercedes-Benz has carried out a planned restyling of the flagship GLS SUV, including its versions from AMG and Maybach, sales will begin this fall .
The second generation Mercedes-Benz GLS debuted four years ago — in April 2019, the luxurious version of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 was shown in November of the same year, the entire family is produced in the USA, in the city of Tuscaloosa (Alabama). The U.S. is also the main market for the GLS, with 2021 the best year for the second-generation SUV here, with 24,482 units sold, and last year sales were down 14.8% to 20,853 units. The main competitors are doing noticeably better: Cadillac Escalade sales in 2022 in the United States amounted to 40,247 units. (-0.6%), BMW X7 — 30,706 units. (+33.2%).

The restyling of the Mercedes-Benz GLS turned out to be modest, there are no radical innovations, even the flagship SUV did not receive plug-in hybrid power plants, although the related mid-size GLE (it survived the restyling in February) has two of them to choose from at once. However, all versions of the GLS are now mild-hybrid: a 48-volt starter-generator with a return of 20-22 hp is implanted into the 9-speed “automatic”, which is uncontested for this model. and 200-250 Nm, depending on the modification. All versions have 4Matic all-wheel drive with an interaxle power take-off to the front axle.

The power of the base gasoline version of the GLS 450 (engine M 256, 3.0 l, 6 cylinders) has been increased from 367 to 381 hp. with a constant torque of 500 Nm. The output of the gasoline GLS 580 with a 4.0-liter V8 (M 176) has increased from 489 hp. and 700 Nm up to 517 hp and 730 Nm.
The junior diesel version of the GLS 350 d (engine OM 656, 3.0 l, 6 cylinders) produced 286 hp before restyling. and 600 Nm, now — 313 hp and 650 Nm. The GLS 400 d (330 hp, 700 Nm) was replaced by the GLS 450 d (367 hp, 750 Nm), although both are based on the OM 656 engine.
From the outside, the updated «duty» versions of the GLS can be identified by a new grille with four horizontal bars instead of the previous two, a new front bumper with a black contoured frame and a new LED taillight filling. In addition, the design of the rims has been updated (from 20 inches) and the body color palette has been expanded.

The palette of interior materials has also been updated, with lacquered linden decor now included as standard. Functional changes are a new steering wheel with touch keys instead of analog ones (a very dubious purchase), updated graphics of the two-screen scoreboard of the MBUX multimedia system, a “transparent hood” mode for off-road driving (allows you to look under the bottom with the help of cameras), additional USB ports for a surcharge , an improved electronic assistant for driving with a trailer (functionality has been expanded, it has become possible to plot a route taking into account the dimensions of the trailer).

All «duty» versions and the sporty Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 have a 7-seater saloon. The AMG version has not changed much in appearance, it has the same front bumper and grille with vertical bars, but new taillights and new wheels have appeared, and the AMG emblem has taken the place of the Mercedes-Benz emblem on the hood.
< p>The output of the 4.0-liter M 177 engine in the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 has not changed — 612 hp and 850 Nm, acceleration to 100 km/h takes 4.2 s, top speed — 280 km/h. At the same time, the settings of the adaptive air suspension, active anti-roll bars and active rear differential have been changed in the AMG version — the difference between different driving modes has become more noticeable.

The luxurious version of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 stands apart: only it has a “royal” interior with two rows of seats, and the second row is shifted back and protected from the trunk by a partition. The Maybach version received a new front bumper with more compact side air intakes covered with a mesh in the form of an ornament of Maybach emblems, the design of regular 23-inch wheels for this version was changed, light projections on the ground with open doors became more diverse and refined, the seats now have a diamond-shaped central upholstery part. The M 177 engine on the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 produces the same 557 hp. and 730 Nm.

The updated Mercedes-Benz GLS will appear at American dealers in September, at European dealers in October, prices have not yet been announced, but they are likely to rise with restyling. The pre-styling GLS is now in Germany from 96,432 euros, in the USA — from 81,800 dollars.
