On May 19, the Prosecutor General's Office recognized Greenpeace as an «undesirable organization.» According to the department, environmentalists made “attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of the country”, financially supported “foreign agents” and engaged in “anti-Russian propaganda”. and mass public actions not coordinated with the authorities in order to form negative public opinion and prevent the implementation of infrastructure and energy projects beneficial to the country,” the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement.
On the same day, the Russian branch of the organization announced its closure. “We express our categorical disagreement with the decision of the Prosecutor General's Office. This decision makes it illegal to continue any Greenpeace activities in Russia,” Greenpeace noted.
