MOSCOW, Oct 19. Continuation of the US policy of supporting Ukraine may force Washington to sacrifice Western Europe and its transatlantic interests, this opinion was expressed by political scientist and professor at the University of Cambridge Anatol Lieven in his article for Responsible Statecraft.
“The current trajectory of US policy risks bringing sacrificing Western Europe for Ukraine, and U.S. policymakers need to recognize that risk. If that happened, it would be one of the worst deals in U.S. history. It is Western and Central Europe, not Ukraine, that remains the area of vital U.S. interests in Europe continent for more than a hundred years,” the publication says.
According to the analyst, Americans tend to rejoice at the final “subjugation” of Europe, which became possible thanks to the Ukrainian conflict. However, according to Lieven, such euphoria obscures the war-induced threats associated with economic stagnation, uncontrolled migration and political extremism in European countries.

It is precisely ensuring and preserving the economic and political well-being of Europe, according to Lieven, that is the vital interest of the United States, without which “America’s power” will be seriously undermined. Realizing such a risk, as well as the huge losses of Ukraine and the failure of its counter-offensive, Washington needs to make every effort to achieve peace as quickly as possible, the expert concluded.
Moscow has repeatedly indicated that it is ready for negotiations, but Kiev is at the legislative level imposed a ban on them. The West constantly calls on Russia for negotiations, for which Moscow shows readiness, but at the same time the West ignores Kyiv’s constant refusals to engage in dialogue.
