The Russian Ministry of Agriculture has reduced the quota for imports of whey for infant formula

MOSCOW, December 15 The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation approved the permitted volume of import of whey for infant formula (breast milk substitutes) next year at the level of 605 tons, which is approximately two and a half times less than this year, the order of the ministry was published on the official portal of legal information.
“To approve the permitted volume of import into the Russian Federation of goods — dry demineralized whey with a demineralization level of 90 percent, intended for the production of infant formula (breast milk substitutes), as well as industrial testing and adjustment of equipment for the production of these products,” the document says .

According to the appendix to the order, the permitted volume of import of these products is 605 tons (EAEU HS code — 0404) — two and a half times less than the level of permissible import in 2023.

Russian authorities in August 2014 banned the import of certain types of agricultural products, raw materials and food from countries that had imposed sanctions against the country — including the USA, EU countries, Canada, Australia and Norway . The ban included meat, sausages, fish and seafood, vegetables, fruits, and dairy products. As sanctions continued, these retaliatory measures were extended.
But whey powder for infant formula was exempted from this food embargo in 2021. At the same time, the permitted import volume in 2021 was 2 thousand tons, in 2022 — 3.661 thousand, in 2023 — 1.5 thousand tons.
