The stronger sex is slower and more reluctant to get used to freelancing
The stereotype that men are supposedly paid more than women is shattered by the new reality — the era of self-employed freelancers.
According to experts from one of the document management services, in 2023 the total annual turnover of self-employed women was 45% higher than that of men, and the average check — almost twice as high.
At the same time, the total number of self-employed women increased by 22% compared to 2022. Their turnover increased by 28%, and the number of payments they accepted — by 35%. The average bill decreased by 5%, to 1,366 rubles. At the same time, the number of self-employed men increased by 55%, their turnover increased by 52%, the number of payments — more than doubled. The average check also decreased — by 34%.
Moscow is the leader in terms of growth dynamics of self-employed men. Over the year, their number in the capital increased by 42%, turnover increased by 27%, and payments tripled. In St. Petersburg, the number of self-employed men increased by 35%, their turnover did not change, and payments increased 2.5 times.
As for self-employed women, there are 19% more of them in Moscow than in 2022. Turnover increased by 35%, and the number of payments — by 21%. In St. Petersburg, the growth is less noticeable (+12% in the increase in the number of self-employed women, +16% in turnover and +61% in the number of payments).
This gender bias may be explained by the fact that many women combine freelance work (self-employment) with maternity leave or work after retirement. Men, who are charged with the responsibility of feeding their family, more often choose the “traditional” one. a hired job where you can be confident in regular, predictable income.
The distribution by sector of employment is also quite interesting. Self-employed people of both sexes actively work in the field of sales of various goods (own production). The segment of information and consulting services is also growing. The number of self-employed men here increased by 72%, their turnover increased by 41%, and the number of payments doubled. The number of self-employed women in this segment increased by 34%, their turnover increased by 24%, and the number of payments — by 43%.
The most noticeable growth was shown by the gaming resources segment, in which the number of self-employed men doubled. Their turnover increased 5.5 times over the year, and the number of payments — 4.5 times. There were 17% more self-employed women in the gaming resources segment, their turnover increased by 3.5 times, and the number of payments — more than doubled.
In the education segment, the number of self-employed men increased by 13% year on year, their turnover increased by 31%, and the number of payments — by 11%. There were 8% more women in this category, their turnover increased by 30%, and the number of accepted payments — by 9%.
Tourism turned out to be a popular destination among men. Over the year, their number in this segment increased by 33%, payment turnover increased by 25%, and the number of payments — by 28%. But self-employed women are more likely to master the advertising segment. Over the year, their number here increased by 57%, turnover increased 6.5 times, and the number of payments — by 53%.
