MOSCOW, July 22 Candidate for US Vice President from The Democratic Party and current Vice President Kamala Harris's partner in the November elections could be, among others, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Politico reports.
CNN previously named four potential Democratic vice presidential candidates — Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.
«Newsom is often discussed as a possible candidate (for US vice president from the Democratic Party — ed.),» the publication writes.
However, the publication emphasizes that if Newsom becomes Harris' electoral partner, they will have to give up the votes of California's 54 electors, since, in accordance with the 12th Amendment to the US Constitution, electors cannot cast their votes for a pair of presidential and vice presidential candidates if both represent the same state.
Among other possible candidates for US vice president from the Democratic Party, the publication names Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Illinois Governor Jay Pritzker, Maryland Governor Westley Moore, and US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.
US President Joe Biden said on Sunday that he will not seek re-election to a second term. He supported the candidacy of his vice president, Kamala Harris. Republican candidate Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Harris will be much easier for him to defeat.
