A new strain of coronavirus was discovered in the French city of Marseille, according to a study by scientists from the Institute of Infectious Diseases in Marseille (IHU). Their work was published on the MedRxiv portal. According to the study, in 12 residents of a city in southeastern France, tests to identify mutations associated with variants of the coronavirus showed an «atypical combination.» For the first time, a new variant of the coronavirus, which was designated as B.1.640.2, was identified in November 2021 with a man who returned from Cameroon. Analysis of the viral genome revealed 46 mutations, the scientists report. «Thus, the pattern of mutations in the genome indicates a new variant, which we called» IHU «(referring to the name of our university)», — the researchers write. Ministry of Health Olivier Veran said that soon this option will prevail. On the eve, the minister said that January due to COVID-19 and other diseases will become «difficult» for hospitals in the country.
