Men and women suffer from depression in different ways.
Revealed that major depressive disorders have sex differences. Scientists have discovered changes that are located in different parts of the brain for each gender, Chronicle.info reports with reference to Channel 24.
Depression is different for men and women
A group of scientists from Laval University conducted a study and found why depression affects women and men differently. Scientists have also identified a potential biomarker of depression in women.
Men and women suffer from depression in different ways,
— said lead study author Caroline Menard, professor at the University of Laval School of Medicine and researcher at the CERVO Center for Brain Research.
He added that the disease occurs in women twice as often. Also, experts record noticeably other symptoms, and the reaction to antidepressants is not the same as in men. So they decided to find out why this is happening.
New biomarker
Canadian scientists have found soluble P-selectin in high concentrations in the blood of female mice with symptoms of depression.
They suggested using soluble P-selectin as a biomarker of depression . It can be used to screen for and diagnose this disorder. In addition, it is suitable for measuring the effectiveness of treatments for such a condition.
Now scientists plan to conduct additional clinical studies among a large group of people to confirm the reliability of the new biomarker.
Recall that earlier researchers from the University of Illinois figured out how to determine depression by blood tests. They identified a biomarker in human platelets. It turned out that depression is consistent with a reduced content of adenylate cyclase, a small molecule inside the cell.
