Lawyer Sergei Sevruk of Shashinka rector Sergei Zuev, who is in the Matrosskaya Tishina pre-trial detention center, said that his client's health had deteriorated, Novaya Gazeta reports.
“Yesterday I saw Sergei Eduardovich, his condition is clearly worse than even a week ago. Difficulty walking with a stick, weakness, dizziness. […] The day before yesterday he could not go up to the 5th floor to see a neuropathologist, she had to come to Zuev's cell herself. I am not a specialist, but by all indications, a pre-infarction condition,” said Sevruk.
The lawyer called the reasons for the deterioration of health the lack of a regimen, diet, walks, observation, examinations and the help of doctors of certain specialties. According to Sevruk, the therapy prescribed at the Moscow Clinical Hospital No. 20, where Zuev was transferred from the pre-trial detention center for examination, «does not help much and is not corrected.»
«Permission to examine Zuev by civilian doctors — narrow specialists has not yet been received from the investigation body, although the defense has repeatedly filed petitions for the admission of doctors and pointed out Zuev's unsatisfactory state of health during the proceedings,» the lawyer noted. He also added that the investigator last visited the rector on December 28, and no active investigative actions are being carried out with him.
From the end of November, Zuev was in the prison hospital due to health problems: over the past year, he had three operations on the heart, carotid artery and leg, and before his arrest he had several hypertensive crises. In December, after being examined in a civilian hospital, the rector was again sent to a pre-trial detention center.

In October 2021, Sergei Zuev was accused of Poorly Performing Research by Shaninka for the Fund for New Forms of Education Development of the Ministry of Educationrelating to the work of teachers (part 4 of article 159 of the Criminal Code). According to the investigation, the 21 million rubles allocated for the work were stolen.
In Shaninka they said that they accepted two of the three stages of research, and in 2020, when the management of the fund changed, the contract was terminated due to » obstructed communication,” and the university paid a penalty. The examination of the Russian Academy of Education, made at the request of the police, came to the conclusion that the work performed by the university did not meet the terms of reference and that they could not be applied in practice. Zuev himself denied guilt.
After that, Zuev was also charged with fictitious employment of employees of the Ministry of Education as researchers at the Institute of Social Sciences RANEPA, which was headed by a sociologist (part 4 of article 159 of the Criminal Code).
