The study was conducted on mice.
Scientists from the USA have for the first time determined what happens to the cardiovascular system of adolescents when smoking electronic cigarettes. As it turned out, the result of vaping on the heart depends on the gender of the teenager, reports the Chronicle.info with reference to Channel 24.
Employees of the Ohio State University College of Medicine (USA) for the first time studied the effect of aerosol from electronic cigarettes on cardiovascular system. True, the study was conducted on mice.
For three weeks or three months, males and females aged 3 to 5 weeks from birth were exposed to an aerosol consisting of a mixture of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin and nicotine. The result was that e-cigarette smoking, modeled in this way, had a large and long-term effect on the cardiovascular system of adolescents, but only in males.
Study results:
- For three months in adolescent male rodents gender revealed a violation of the diastolic function of the left ventricle of the heart (i.e., the myocardium of the left ventricle cannot fully relax to replenish with blood). Mice and the elderly usually have such disorders.
- Meanwhile, short-term exposure to aerosols (three weeks) did not lead to any noticeable effect on heart health.
More care should be taken , because the long-term effects of vaping are still unknown
Researchers believe that the findings should increase anxiety about vaping, especially among young people.
Teenagers often believe that vaping is not as harmful as cigarettes. But in reality, scientists still don't know the long-term effects of vaping, as it has only been around since the early 2000s.
