SUKHUM, Nov 10 Sukhumi Airport will be opened as scheduled , President of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhaniya said on Thursday, speaking with a report on the work done to the citizens of the country.
Two and a half years have passed since Bzhaniya took office as president. In August 2022, Bzhania stated that the country's authorities are counting on the support of the Russian leadership in launching international flights to Sukhum by 2024.
“Today we are closely dealing with the issue of launching our airport, a design contract has already been signed, preparatory work has begun. I think that the airport will be open as scheduled,” the president said.
Located 18 kilometers from the city, the Sukhumi airport was built in the 1960s and until 1993, when it was closed, it could receive up to five thousand passengers a day. The leadership of Abkhazia has repeatedly planned to restore the airport and start flights. Earlier, Bzhaniya reported that the airport plans to start receiving the first flights by January 2024.
