Pashinyan stresses the importance of confirming the CSTO's area of responsibility in Armenia

YEREVAN, Nov 23 Confirmation of the Organization's area of responsibility is important for Yerevan Collective Security Treaty in Armenia, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at the CSTO summit.
In his opinion, “another Azerbaijani aggression” and the fact that so far it has not been possible to “come to a decision on the CSTO reaction” to it, raise fundamental issues that are extremely important both for the organization and for its perception in the Armenian society.
“For us, the confirmation of the CSTO's zone of responsibility in the Republic of Armenia is of fundamental importance. The very existence of such a wording may seem strange, but, studying the context of our recent discussions , we have come to the conclusion that this is of utmost importance,” Pashinyan said.

He noted that, according to the Alma-Ata Declaration of December 21, 1991, the founding countries of the CIS, as independent states, recognized each other's territorial integrity and the inviolability of existing borders. “This means that the above-mentioned countries became independent with the administrative borders that existed between the republics during the Soviet Union. That is, the former administrative borders became state borders, and the territories of the above-mentioned countries were determined by these borders. It was within these borders that the Republic of Armenia became a member of the UN and the CSTO,” Pashinyan said.

Shootings periodically take place on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The last serious aggravation occurred on the night of September 13th. Yerevan stated that the Azerbaijani military fired at the border areas of Armenia – Gegharkunik, Vayots Dzor, Syunik regions (connects Armenia with Iran) using artillery and drones. These territories have nothing to do with Karabakh. Baku stated that the Armenian military fired at the positions of the Azerbaijani troops on the border, there was a clash. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry accused Armenia of intending to disrupt the peace process. Both sides reported casualties among their military.

By morning, the parties agreed on a ceasefire. According to the head of the international committee of the Federation Council Grigory Karasin, the ceasefire on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan was achieved thanks to the efforts of Russia, including after the conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the work of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
